Inspecting ‘bashed’ Himalayan Balsam

Japanese Knotweed Event

Sunday 31 August, 2014
Meet at 11 am at Ashley Mill Bridge.

FOBB volunteers have mainly focussed their efforts on the removal of Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed from our target area of the Bowdon Bollin but the spread of Japanese Knotweed also needs to be addressed. Knotweed requires the application of herbicide as it can re-grow from tiny pieces of root. In fact it is such a menace that, once out of the ground, it is classed as a hazardous waste. Dense areas need to be sprayed with herbicide but where it is less established and mixed in with other plants, FOBB uses an injector (pictured) so the herbicide can be applied directly to each Knotweed stem.
On Sunday 31 August FOBB will demonstrate the technique and volunteers can have a go themselves.
New volunteers very welcome!
